Provisional Measure
A Provisional Measure is a legal tool used by the executive branch of government to enact urgent laws without the usual legislative process. It allows for immediate action on important issues, typically in situations requiring quick responses, such as economic crises or public emergencies. These measures have a limited duration and must be approved by the legislative body, such as the National Congress in Brazil, to become permanent laws.
Once a Provisional Measure is issued, it takes effect immediately but must be reviewed and voted on by the legislature within a specified timeframe. If the legislature does not approve it, the measure expires. This process ensures that while the government can act swiftly, there is still a check by the legislative branch to maintain democratic oversight.
