Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA)
Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by the cells of the prostate gland. It is primarily found in semen but can also be detected in small amounts in the blood. PSA levels can be measured through a simple blood test, which is often used to screen for prostate cancer or monitor treatment effectiveness.
Elevated PSA levels may indicate various conditions, including prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or prostatitis. However, high PSA levels do not definitively mean cancer is present, as many factors can influence these results. Regular screening and consultation with a healthcare provider are essential for accurate interpretation.
