Prokinetic
Prokinetic refers to a class of medications that enhance gastrointestinal motility, helping to move food and waste through the digestive system more effectively. These drugs are often used to treat conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and gastroparesis, where normal movement in the stomach and intestines is impaired.
By increasing the contractions of the stomach and intestines, prokinetics can alleviate symptoms such as nausea, bloating, and heartburn. Common prokinetic agents include metoclopramide and domperidone, which work by blocking certain receptors in the brain and gut to promote better digestive function.
