Prince Karl of Austria
Prince Karl of Austria, born on August 17, 1887, was a member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. He was the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, reigning from 1916 until the end of World War I in 1918. His reign was marked by efforts to negotiate peace during the war and to maintain the integrity of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
After the war, Karl went into exile and attempted to regain the throne in Hungary in 1921 but was unsuccessful. He spent his later years in Switzerland and Madeira, where he died on April 1, 1922. He was beatified by the Catholic Church in 2004.
