Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome
Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) is a disease that primarily affects young pigs, particularly those between 5 and 12 weeks old. It is caused by the porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), which leads to a range of symptoms including weight loss, poor growth, and weakened immune response. Affected pigs may also show signs of respiratory distress and skin lesions.
The syndrome can result in significant economic losses for pig farmers due to increased mortality rates and reduced productivity. Effective management strategies, including vaccination against PCV2, are essential to control the spread of PMWS and improve the health of affected herds.
