Postpartum Hemorrhage
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a medical condition characterized by excessive bleeding following childbirth. It is defined as a loss of more than 500 milliliters of blood after a vaginal delivery or more than 1,000 milliliters after a cesarean section. PPH can occur immediately after delivery or within the first 24 hours, known as primary PPH, or later, referred to as secondary PPH.
The causes of postpartum hemorrhage include uterine atony, retained placental tissue, and trauma to the birth canal. Effective management of PPH is crucial to prevent serious complications, and it often involves medications, fluid replacement, and sometimes surgical interventions. Early recognition and treatment are essential for the safety of the mother.
