Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery
The Posterior Inferior Cerebellar Artery (PICA) is a vital blood vessel that supplies oxygenated blood to the posterior part of the cerebellum, a region of the brain responsible for coordination and balance. It branches off from the vertebral artery and plays a crucial role in maintaining the health of the cerebellum and surrounding structures.
PICA also supplies blood to parts of the medulla oblongata, which is involved in autonomic functions such as breathing and heart rate. Damage or blockage of this artery can lead to serious conditions, including Wallenberg syndrome, characterized by symptoms like dizziness and difficulty swallowing.
