Portiuncula
The Portiuncula, also known as the Portiuncula Chapel, is a small church located within the larger complex of the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi, Italy. It was originally built in the 4th century and is significant for its association with Saint Francis of Assisi, who restored it in 1208. The chapel is considered the birthplace of the Franciscan Order.
The Portiuncula holds great importance in Christianity, particularly for Franciscans, as it is where Saint Francis received divine inspiration and established his community. It is also the site where he obtained the indulgence known as the Portiuncula Indulgence, which grants forgiveness of sins to those who visit the chapel under specific conditions.
