Port Essington
Port Essington is a historical site located on the Cobourg Peninsula in the Northern Territory of Australia. Established in 1838, it was intended to be a major settlement and trading port. However, due to harsh conditions and limited success, the settlement was abandoned by 1849.
Today, Port Essington is known for its archaeological significance and is part of the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park. Visitors can explore the remnants of the settlement, including old buildings and artifacts, which provide insight into early European attempts at colonization in northern Australia.
