Polymyxin
Polymyxin is a class of antibiotics primarily used to treat infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. It works by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane, leading to cell death. Due to its effectiveness against resistant strains, it is often used as a last resort for serious infections.
There are several types of polymyxins, with Polymyxin B and Colistin being the most commonly used. While effective, these antibiotics can have side effects, particularly on the kidneys and nervous system, making careful monitoring essential during treatment.
