Plecostomus
The Plecostomus, commonly known as the pleco, is a freshwater fish native to the rivers and streams of South America. It belongs to the family Loricariidae and is recognized for its distinctive armored body and sucker-like mouth, which it uses to graze on algae and detritus. Plecos are popular in the aquarium trade due to their ability to help keep tanks clean.
Plecostomus can grow quite large, with some species reaching lengths of over 24 inches. They are generally peaceful fish, making them suitable for community tanks. However, their size and dietary needs should be considered when selecting tank mates and aquarium size.
