Platelets are tiny, disc-shaped cells in our blood that play a crucial role in healing wounds. When we get a cut or injury, platelets quickly gather at the site to form a plug, helping to stop bleeding. They release chemicals that attract more platelets and promote the healing process, making them essential for our body's defense against blood loss.
These small cells are produced in the bone marrow from larger cells called megakaryocytes. A healthy platelet count is vital for proper blood clotting, and low levels can lead to excessive bleeding, while high levels may increase the risk of thrombosis, where blood clots form inappropriately.
