Pitch Perception
Pitch perception is the ability to identify the frequency of sound waves, which determines how high or low a sound is. It is measured in Hertz (Hz), with higher frequencies producing higher pitches and lower frequencies resulting in lower pitches. The human ear can typically perceive pitches ranging from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
The process of pitch perception involves the cochlea, a spiral-shaped organ in the inner ear that converts sound vibrations into neural signals. These signals are then transmitted to the auditory cortex in the brain, where they are interpreted, allowing us to recognize and differentiate various sounds, such as musical notes or spoken words.
