Pinelands
The Pinelands, also known as the New Jersey Pinelands, is a unique ecological region located in southern New Jersey. It covers approximately 1.1 million acres and is characterized by its sandy soils, pine forests, and wetlands. The area is home to diverse wildlife and plant species, many of which are rare or endangered.
Designated as a National Reserve in 1978, the Pinelands is protected to preserve its natural resources and cultural heritage. The region includes several towns and communities, as well as the Pinelands Commission, which oversees land use and conservation efforts. The Pinelands is also recognized for its historical significance, with sites dating back to the Lenape Native Americans.
