Pileated Woodpecker
The Pileated Woodpecker is a large bird native to North America, known for its striking black and white plumage and a prominent red crest on its head. It typically measures about 16 to 19 inches in length and has a wingspan of around 26 to 30 inches. This woodpecker primarily inhabits mature forests, where it feeds on insects, particularly ants and beetles, as well as fruits and nuts.
These woodpeckers are recognized for their loud, distinctive calls and their ability to create large rectangular holes in trees while foraging for food. The Pileated Woodpecker plays a vital role in forest ecosystems by helping to control insect populations and creating nesting sites for other wildlife.
