Pikeman
A "Pikeman" refers to a soldier who is armed with a pike, a long spear-like weapon used primarily in infantry formations. This type of soldier was common in European armies from the late Middle Ages through the early modern period. Pikemen played a crucial role in battles, often forming a defensive line against cavalry and other infantry.
The use of pikemen peaked during the Renaissance and the Thirty Years' War, where they were often organized into units called pike blocks. These formations allowed them to effectively counteract the threat posed by mounted troops and provided a strong front in battle. As firearms became more prevalent, the role of the pikeman gradually diminished.
