Phocas
Phocas was a Byzantine Emperor who ruled from 602 to 610 AD. He came to power after a coup that overthrew the previous emperor, Maurice. His reign was marked by military struggles, particularly against the Persian Empire, which invaded Byzantine territories during his rule. Phocas is often remembered for his harsh and tyrannical governance, leading to widespread discontent among the populace.
In 610 AD, Phocas was overthrown by Heraclius, who led a successful revolt against him. Following his defeat, Phocas was captured and executed. His reign is often viewed as a period of decline for the Byzantine Empire, setting the stage for the challenges that would follow under Heraclius.
