Philippe Bunau-Varilla
Philippe Bunau-Varilla was a French engineer and key figure in the construction of the Panama Canal. Born in 1859, he initially worked on the canal project when it was under French control. After the project faced significant challenges, he became a strong advocate for its completion.
In 1904, Bunau-Varilla played a crucial role in negotiating the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty, which granted the United States control over the canal zone. His efforts helped facilitate the construction of the canal, which was completed in 1914, significantly impacting global trade and maritime navigation.
