Peshat
Peshat is a term used in Jewish biblical exegesis that refers to the straightforward, literal interpretation of the scriptures. It focuses on the plain meaning of the text, considering the context, grammar, and historical background. This approach is essential for understanding the basic message of the Torah and other Hebrew Bible texts.
In contrast to other interpretative methods, such as Remez (hint) or Drash (homiletical), Peshat emphasizes clarity and accessibility. Scholars and students often begin their study of biblical texts with Peshat to establish a foundation before exploring deeper, more complex interpretations.
