Peracid
Peracids are a class of organic compounds that contain a peroxy group (-O-O-) attached to a carboxylic acid. They are known for their strong oxidizing properties, making them useful in various chemical reactions, including the synthesis of other compounds and in industrial applications. One common example is peracetic acid, which is often used as a disinfectant and bleaching agent.
These compounds can be generated through the reaction of an acid with hydrogen peroxide. Due to their reactivity, peracids are employed in organic chemistry for processes like epoxidation, where they help convert alkenes into epoxides. Their ability to break down pollutants also makes them valuable in environmental applications.
