Patent Foramen Ovale
Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) is a small, flap-like opening between the upper chambers of the heart, known as the atria. This opening is a normal part of fetal development, allowing blood to bypass the lungs before birth. In most people, the PFO closes shortly after birth, but in some, it remains open, which is referred to as a "patent" foramen ovale.
While many individuals with a PFO experience no symptoms, it can sometimes lead to complications, such as stroke or migraine. Diagnosis typically involves imaging techniques like echocardiography. Treatment options may include monitoring or, in some cases, a minimally invasive procedure to close the opening.
