Patellar dislocation occurs when the patella, or kneecap, slips out of its normal position, usually towards the outside of the knee. This injury often happens during sports activities, especially those involving sudden changes in direction or impact. Symptoms include severe pain, swelling, and an inability to straighten the leg.
Treatment typically involves reducing the dislocation, which means repositioning the kneecap back into place. After this, a period of rest, ice, and physical therapy is usually recommended to strengthen the surrounding muscles and prevent future dislocations. In some cases, surgery may be necessary for recurrent dislocations.
