Parliament Act 1949
The Parliament Act 1949 is a piece of legislation in the United Kingdom that allows the House of Commons to bypass the House of Lords in certain circumstances. It was an amendment to the original Parliament Act 1911, which limited the power of the Lords to delay legislation. The 1949 Act reduced the time the Lords could delay a bill from two years to one year.
This Act primarily applies to public bills, enabling the Commons to enact laws even if the Lords reject them. It was used to pass significant legislation, including the House of Lords Act 1999, which further reformed the House of Lords.
