Pacific Mussel
The Pacific Mussel is a bivalve mollusk found along the Pacific coast of North America, particularly from Alaska to California. It typically inhabits rocky shorelines and tidal zones, where it attaches itself to surfaces using strong, thread-like structures called byssal threads. These mussels can grow up to 8 inches in length and have a dark blue to black shell, often with a shiny interior.
Pacific Mussels are filter feeders, meaning they obtain their food by filtering plankton and other small particles from the water. They play a crucial role in their ecosystem by helping to maintain water quality and providing habitat for various marine species. Their populations can be affected by environmental changes and human activities, such as pollution and overharvesting.
