PFOS
PFOS, or perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, is a synthetic chemical belonging to a group known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). It has been used in various industrial applications and consumer products, such as stain-resistant fabrics, firefighting foams, and non-stick cookware. PFOS is known for its water- and grease-repellent properties.
Due to its persistence in the environment and potential health risks, PFOS has raised concerns among scientists and regulatory agencies. Studies suggest that exposure to PFOS may be linked to adverse health effects, including immune system disruption and developmental issues. As a result, many countries have implemented regulations to limit its use and release into the environment.
