Our Lady of Meritxell
Our Lady of Meritxell is the patron saint of Andorra, a small landlocked country in the Pyrenees mountains. The statue of the Virgin Mary, known as "Mare de Déu de Meritxell," is housed in the Sanctuary of Meritxell, a significant pilgrimage site for locals and visitors alike. The statue is believed to date back to the 12th century and represents a key part of Andorran cultural heritage.
The sanctuary was rebuilt in 1976 after a fire destroyed the original structure. Designed by the architect Ricardo Bofill, the new building features modern elements while honoring the historical significance of the site. Each year, thousands gather to celebrate the feast day of Our Lady of Meritxell on September 8.
