Our Lady of Coromoto
Our Lady of Coromoto is a title given to the Virgin Mary, recognized as the patroness of Venezuela. The devotion originated in the 17th century when a Spanish priest, Father Juan de San Buenaventura, reported a vision of the Virgin Mary to the indigenous Coromoto people. This event led to the establishment of a shrine in her honor.
The image of Our Lady of Coromoto is often depicted as a dark-skinned Virgin holding the child Jesus. In 1950, she was officially declared the patron saint of Venezuela by Pope Pius XII, and her feast day is celebrated on September 8.
