Osteopathic medicine is a branch of healthcare that emphasizes a holistic approach to patient care. Practitioners, known as DOs (Doctors of Osteopathy), focus on the body's ability to heal itself and consider the interconnectedness of the body's systems. They are trained to perform osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), which involves using the hands to diagnose, treat, and prevent conditions. Like their allopathic counterparts, MDs (Doctors of Medicine), DOs are fully licensed physicians who can prescribe medication and perform surgery. They receive similar training in medical school, but with additional coursework in the musculoskeletal system.
