Order of the Patriotic War
The Order of the Patriotic War was a military decoration established by the Soviet Union on May 20, 1942, to honor soldiers and commanders for their bravery and leadership during World War II, particularly in the Great Patriotic War against Nazi Germany. It recognized acts of valor and significant contributions to the war effort, serving as a symbol of national pride.
The order was awarded in two classes: the first class for higher-ranking officers and the second class for lower-ranking personnel. Over 1.5 million awards were given, making it one of the most widely awarded decorations in Soviet history, alongside other honors like the Hero of the Soviet Union.
