Order of the Merced
The Order of the Merced, also known as the Mercedarians, is a Catholic religious order founded in 1218 in Barcelona, Spain, by Saint Peter Nolasco. Its primary mission was to rescue Christian captives from Muslim territories during the Middle Ages. The order emphasizes the values of mercy and compassion, dedicating itself to the service of those in need.
Members of the Order take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, along with a special vow to offer their lives for the liberation of captives. The Mercedarians have played a significant role in various humanitarian efforts throughout history, continuing their mission of mercy in modern times.
