Opponens Pollicis
The Opponens Pollicis is a small, intrinsic muscle located in the hand, specifically in the thenar eminence, which is the fleshy mound at the base of the thumb. Its primary function is to allow the thumb to oppose the fingers, enabling grasping and pinching movements. This muscle plays a crucial role in hand dexterity and functionality.
Innervated by the median nerve, the Opponens Pollicis originates from the tubercle of the scaphoid bone and the trapezium bone. It inserts into the entire length of the radial side of the first metacarpal bone. Proper functioning of this muscle is essential for various daily activities that require fine motor skills.
