Old World porcupines
Old World porcupines are large rodents found mainly in Africa, Europe, and Asia. Unlike their New World relatives, they have a stocky body covered in sharp quills that serve as a defense mechanism against predators. These quills can detach easily, making it difficult for attackers to catch them. Old World porcupines are primarily nocturnal and are known for their strong digging abilities, often creating burrows to live in.
These porcupines are herbivores, feeding on a diet of leaves, roots, and fruits. They play an important role in their ecosystems by helping to disperse seeds and aerate the soil through their burrowing activities. Their unique adaptations and behaviors make them fascinating creatures in the animal kingdom.
