Oka Crisis
The Oka Crisis was a land dispute that occurred in 1990 in the small town of Oka, Quebec, Canada. It involved the Mohawk community of Kanesatake, who opposed the expansion of a golf course onto land they considered sacred. Tensions escalated when the local police attempted to remove the protesters, leading to a standoff that lasted 78 days.
The crisis drew national attention and highlighted issues of Indigenous rights and land claims in Canada. The Canadian military was eventually called in to help resolve the situation, which ended with a negotiated settlement but left lasting impacts on Indigenous relations in the country.
