The Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) was a U.S. government agency responsible for regulating and supervising savings associations, also known as thrifts. Established in 1989, its primary goal was to ensure the safety and soundness of these financial institutions, which primarily focused on residential mortgage lending.
In 2011, the OTS was dissolved as part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Its functions were transferred to the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), aiming to enhance oversight and consumer protection in the financial sector.
