Ocean Layers
The ocean is divided into different layers based on depth and light penetration. The top layer, called the epipelagic zone, extends from the surface down to about 200 meters. This zone receives plenty of sunlight, allowing plants like phytoplankton to thrive and support marine life.
Beneath the epipelagic zone lies the mesopelagic zone, which stretches from 200 to 1,000 meters deep. In this layer, light diminishes, and temperatures drop. Below this is the bathypelagic zone, where it is dark and cold, home to unique creatures like the anglerfish and giant squid.
