Occupation of Alcatraz
The Occupation of Alcatraz was a significant event that took place from November 1969 to June 1971. A group of Native American activists, calling themselves the Indians of All Tribes, occupied the abandoned island of Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay. They aimed to highlight issues faced by Native Americans, including broken treaties and poor living conditions.
The occupation drew national attention and sparked discussions about Native American rights. The activists proposed turning the island into a cultural center and educational facility. Although the U.S. government eventually removed the occupiers, the event is remembered as a pivotal moment in the American Indian Movement.
