Novarupta
Novarupta is a volcano located in the Alaska Peninsula, known for its massive eruption in 1912. This eruption was one of the largest in the 20th century, releasing an estimated 30 million tons of ash into the atmosphere. The event significantly altered the surrounding landscape and created the Novarupta lava dome.
The eruption of Novarupta formed the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, a unique geological feature filled with volcanic ash and pumice. The area is now part of the Katmai National Park and Preserve, which attracts visitors interested in geology and natural history.
