Northern Shoveler
The Northern Shoveler is a medium-sized duck known for its distinctive broad, spatula-shaped bill. Males have striking green heads, white chests, and chestnut-colored sides, while females are mottled brown for camouflage. They are commonly found in wetlands, marshes, and shallow lakes across North America and parts of Europe and Asia.
These ducks are dabbling feeders, using their unique bills to filter food from the water. Their diet mainly consists of aquatic plants, seeds, and small invertebrates. During migration, the Northern Shoveler travels in large flocks, often mixing with other species like American Black Ducks and Northern Pintails.
