Northern Eider
The Northern Eider is a large sea duck found in the northern regions of the world, particularly in the Arctic and sub-Arctic areas. It is known for its striking plumage, with males displaying a distinctive combination of black, white, and green colors, while females are mottled brown for camouflage. These ducks primarily feed on mollusks, crustaceans, and other marine invertebrates.
During the breeding season, Northern Eiders nest on coastal tundra and often form large colonies. They are migratory birds, traveling south to more temperate waters during the winter months. Their populations are monitored due to habitat changes and hunting pressures, making conservation efforts important for their survival.
