North American Electric Reliability Corporation
The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) is a nonprofit organization responsible for ensuring the reliability of the bulk power system in North America. Established in 1968, NERC develops and enforces reliability standards, monitors the grid's performance, and assesses future reliability risks. It works with various stakeholders, including utilities and regulatory agencies, to maintain a stable and secure electricity supply.
NERC's jurisdiction covers the continental United States, Canada, and a portion of Mexico. It operates under the oversight of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in the U.S. and collaborates with regional entities to address local reliability issues.
