North American Datum
The North American Datum (NAD) is a geodetic datum used as a reference for mapping and surveying in North America. It provides a framework for measuring locations on the Earth's surface, ensuring consistency in geographic data. The most commonly used versions are NAD27 and NAD83, which differ in their methods of defining the Earth's shape and size.
NAD27 was established in 1927 and is based on a specific ellipsoid model, while NAD83, introduced in 1986, uses a more accurate model aligned with the global positioning system. Both datums are essential for various applications, including navigation, land surveying, and geographic information systems (GIS).
