Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors
Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (NRIs) are a class of medications that primarily increase the levels of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine in the brain. They work by blocking the reabsorption of norepinephrine into nerve cells, which helps enhance mood and alleviate symptoms of certain mental health conditions, such as depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
These medications are often prescribed when other treatments, like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are not effective. Common examples of NRIs include atomoxetine and reboxetine. While they can be beneficial, they may also have side effects, so it's important for patients to discuss their options with a healthcare provider.
