Non-REM sleep, or non-rapid eye movement sleep, is a crucial part of our sleep cycle that helps the body and mind rest and recover. It consists of three stages, each deeper than the last. During these stages, our heart rate slows, breathing becomes more regular, and our body repairs tissues and builds bone and muscle. This restorative process is essential for overall health and well-being.
In stage 1, we transition from wakefulness to sleep, experiencing light sleep. Stage 2 is a deeper sleep where our body temperature drops and eye movements stop. Finally, in stage 3, also known as deep sleep, it becomes harder to wake up, and this stage is vital for feeling refreshed and alert the next day.
