Njoya script
The Njoya script is a writing system developed by the Cameroonian king, Njoya, in the late 19th century. It was created to transcribe the Ngumba language, which is spoken by the Bamum people in the western region of Cameroon. The script features unique symbols that represent sounds and syllables, allowing for a more accurate representation of the spoken language.
Njoya's motivation for creating this script was to preserve the culture and history of the Bamum people. The script gained popularity and was used in various forms of communication, including literature and education, before facing decline during colonial rule. Today, efforts are being made to revive and promote the Njoya script as part of cultural heritage.
