Nixie tube
A Nixie tube is a type of electronic display device used to show numbers and some symbols. It consists of a glass tube filled with a low-pressure gas, typically neon, and contains multiple cathodes shaped like the digits 0-9. When an electric current passes through the tube, the gas glows around the selected cathode, illuminating the corresponding number.
Originally developed in the 1950s, Nixie tubes were widely used in calculators, clocks, and various electronic devices before being replaced by modern LED displays. Today, they are appreciated by enthusiasts and collectors for their vintage aesthetic and unique glow.
