Nigrescence
Nigrescence is a psychological model that describes the process of developing a Black identity. Coined by psychologist William E. Cross Jr., it outlines stages individuals may go through as they become more aware of their racial identity and its significance in society. The model emphasizes the importance of understanding one's cultural heritage and the impact of systemic racism.
The stages of Nigrescence include pre-encounter, encounter, immersion-emersion, and internalization. Each stage represents a different level of awareness and acceptance of one's Black identity. This framework helps individuals navigate their experiences and fosters a deeper connection to their cultural roots.
