Nevus
A nevus is a common skin growth, often referred to as a mole. It typically appears as a small, dark spot on the skin, which can be brown, black, or even skin-colored. Nevi are formed by clusters of melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing the pigment melanin. Most nevi are harmless and do not require treatment, but they can vary in size, shape, and color.
While most nevi are benign, some can develop into skin cancer, particularly a type called melanoma. It is important to monitor moles for any changes in appearance, such as asymmetry, irregular borders, or color variation. Regular skin checks by a dermatologist can help ensure skin health and early detection of any potential issues.
