Nerve Agent
A nerve agent is a type of chemical weapon that disrupts the normal functioning of the nervous system. These agents inhibit the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, leading to an accumulation of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This causes continuous stimulation of muscles, glands, and the central nervous system, resulting in severe symptoms and potentially death.
Nerve agents are classified as chemical warfare agents and include substances like sarin and VX. They can be delivered through various means, such as aerosols or liquids, and are highly toxic even in small amounts. Due to their dangerous nature, the use of nerve agents is prohibited under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
