National Wild and Scenic River
A "National Wild and Scenic River" is a designation in the United States that protects certain rivers for their outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values. This program was established by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968, which aims to preserve rivers in their free-flowing condition and safeguard their surrounding environments.
Rivers designated as Wild and Scenic are classified into three categories: Wild, Scenic, and Recreational. Wild rivers are largely untouched, Scenic rivers have some development but are still largely undeveloped, and Recreational rivers are more accessible and may have some human activity. This designation helps ensure the rivers remain healthy and vibrant for future generations.
