National Radio Quiet Zone
The National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ) is a designated area in the United States that limits radio frequency interference. Established in 1958, it covers parts of West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland, primarily to protect the sensitive operations of the Green Bank Observatory and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
Within the NRQZ, strict regulations are in place to minimize electronic noise, making it an ideal location for radio astronomy research. The zone helps scientists study celestial phenomena without interference from commercial radio signals, ensuring clearer data collection and analysis.
